Burnie, on the shore of Emu Bay, is Tasmania’s fourth-largest city and a major industrial centre. Burnie is the fifth-largest container port in Australia.

Shipping is an important part of the economy along with its timber industry. A large pulp and paper factory is located here.

Burnie is served by the burnie city council and facilities include a regional hospital, art gallery, and public and private schools. Burnie is home to the north-west campus of the University of Tasmania.

A boardwalk on Burnie’s foreshore leads to West Beach where there is a fairy penguin observation centre.
