More international tourists visit Tasmania

More than 150,000 overseas tourists visited Tasmania in 2006 – an increase of 13% over the previous year. Spending by international tourists surged by 45%.

Federal Tourism Minister Fran Bailey said that Australia was encouraging people to stay longer and was also targeting experienced travellers. The campaign was having a positive effect, she said.

Arrivals in Tasmania from Britain were up by 13%. There was an increase of 20% in travellers from Germany and from Singapore the numbers were up by 58%.

The Tourism Minister said that tourists were captivated by Tasmania’s food and wine, and also by the national parks and the heritage of the island.

International visitors to Tasmania spent more than $211 million in the past year.

International Visitor Survey figures show 141,000 visitors spent more than 2.7 million nights in Tasmania in the year to 30 September 2006.

Tasmania recorded a 10.6 per cent jump in visitor numbers and an 18 per cent jump in visitor nights.
