Scotch Oakburn College

Scotch Oakburn College in Launceston was established in 1979. It is a day school and boarding school for boys and girls, covering early learning years through to Year 12.

Scotch Oakburn College is a work of the Uniting Church and is built on a Christian heritage.

The school traditions go back to the Methodist Ladies’ College, founded in 1886, which later became Oakburn College, and to Scotch College, founded in 1901. The two schools amalgamated in 1979.

Three campuses

Scotch Oakburn College has three campuses:

  • Penquite Campus

    This covers the Senior School, the Middle School, the Performing Arts Centre and the sports complex.

  • Elphin Campus

    This covers the Junior School, the Early Learning Centre and the Boarding House.

  • Valley Campus

    The location of the outdoor education and environment centre, where courses designed to build initiative, teamwork and leadership skills are conducted.

The music and drama departments of Scotch Oakburn College operate from the Performing Arts Centre on the Penquite Campus.

Facilities include a 400-seat auditorium, a drama studio, an orchestra rehearsal room, two classrooms, instrument tuition rooms and two recording studios.

Scotch Oakburn College has choirs, bands and orchestras for all levels. Students can participate in drama and musical productions.

Other art options at the College include painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography and debating.

Sports facilities at Scotch Oakburn College

Scotch Oakburn Park is the sports complex on the Penquite Campus.

Boys and girls choose from a wide range of sports including athletics, cricket, Australian Rules Football, soccer, hockey, tennis, sailing, rowing, swimming, softball, volleyball, basketball, netball and badminton.

new senior student centre for scotch oakburn college

In March 2007 Scotch Oakburn College opened stage one of a new $10.5 million senior student centre on the Penquite Campus.

Stage two, which will be a road underpass and a new Physical Education Centre, is due for completion at the beginning of term two in 2007. Construction of the third stage, a purpose-built Middle School, will start later in the year.
